How to Make a Clay Toothbrush Holder: Step by Step Guide

Handmade clay pieces on a table, showing how to make a clay toothbrush holder with air-dry clay

The plastic cup on your bathroom counter has done its job. It is time for something better. Learning how to make a clay toothbrush holder is one of the quickest air-dry clay projects there is. One evening to shape it. Two or three days to dry. Then it sits on your counter looking like something from a boutique.

Why this is a smart first project in the UAE

Bathrooms in UAE apartments are often small and very white. A single handmade piece in terracotta or teal changes the whole feel. A toothbrush holder is also the right size to learn on. It is a simple cylinder. It teaches you slab rolling, joining and smoothing without any pressure. If it comes out a little uneven, it still looks charming on the counter.

It is also useful. Toothbrushes, razors, a small tube of paste or makeup brushes all fit. Make a matching clay soap dish the same evening and you have a set.

What you need

About 250 grams of air-dry clay. A rolling pin, a craft knife or wooden tool, a small cup of water, a cardboard tube or a glass to shape around, baking paper, paint and sealer. The Sawa Pottery Kit includes the clay, tools, paints and a guide with photos. No wheel and no kiln needed.

How to make a clay toothbrush holder step by step

Step 1: Roll the wall slab

Knead the clay until soft. Roll it into a rectangle about 6 mm thick, 10 cm tall and 22 cm long. Even thickness matters more than perfect edges.

Step 2: Wrap it around a form

Wrap baking paper around a glass or a cardboard tube about 6 cm wide. Then wrap the clay slab around it. Overlap the ends by 1 cm. Score both edges, dab on water and press them together. Smooth the seam with a damp finger.

Step 3: Cut the base

Stand the cylinder on a fresh slab of clay. Cut around it to make a base disc. Score the bottom rim of the cylinder and the disc, add water and join. Roll a thin coil and press it into the inside corner for a strong seal.

Step 4: Add drainage

Poke two or three small holes in the base with a pencil. Water from wet toothbrushes needs a way out. Skip this step and the holder stays damp inside.

Step 5: Shape the rim

Trim the top straight, or cut a gentle scallop with a knife. Some people pinch the rim into a soft wave. Keep it simple on your first one.

Step 6: Remove the form early

After about 30 minutes, gently slide the glass or tube out. Clay shrinks as it dries and will crack if left tight around a hard form. Leave the paper inside if it does not come out easily.

Step 7: Dry for two to three days

Stand the holder upright on baking paper, away from AC vents and direct sun. Turn it once a day so it dries evenly.

Step 8: Sand, paint and seal well

Sand the rim and seam. Paint inside and out. Then apply two coats of sealer to every surface, including the base and the drainage holes. Sealing is what lets the holder live in a humid bathroom. Read how to seal air-dry clay for the full method.

Design ideas

A terracotta body with a single teal stripe. A cream cylinder with fingerprint dots. A tall arch cut-out on one side so brushes lean out. Or press a lace scrap into the wet slab for texture before wrapping it.

Common questions

Will it survive in a humid bathroom?

Yes, if it is fully sealed inside and out and has drainage holes. Place it on a small tray and let it dry out once a week. Avoid leaving it in a puddle.

Can I make it without a glass or tube?

Yes. Build it with coils stacked on a base disc, then smooth the walls. It takes a little longer but works well. Our coil pot guide shows the technique.

Is air-dry clay safe for cups or food?

No. Air-dry clay is for decor and dry storage only. Toothbrush holders, pen holders, bukhoor and key dishes are fine. Never use it for anything you eat or drink from.

Which kit size should I get?
