How to Make a Clay Mirror Frame: A Simple Step by Step Guide

Handmade clay decor in a calm home, showing how to make a clay mirror frame with air-dry clay

You have a small round mirror from a home store and a bare wall that needs something. Learning how to make a clay mirror frame turns that plain mirror into a handmade piece in one evening. No wheel. No kiln. Just air-dry clay, your hands and a few days of patience while it dries.

Why a clay mirror frame is a great UAE project

Most of us in the UAE live in rentals. We cannot repaint or drill a dozen holes. A small mirror on a single hook is one of the easiest ways to make a room feel finished. A handmade frame makes it personal. It also suits the local style. Scalloped edges, arch shapes and simple geometric patterns all look at home next to a bukhoor burner and a shelf of prayer beads.

The project is beginner friendly. It uses slab and coil techniques, which are the first two things you learn with air-dry clay. If you have already made a clay photo frame, this is the next step up.

What you need

A small mirror, 10 to 15 cm across, with a flat back. About 300 to 400 grams of air-dry clay. A rolling pin, a craft knife or wooden tool, a small bowl of water, baking paper, paint, a sealer and strong craft glue. Everything except the mirror and the glue comes in the Sawa Pottery Kit.

How to make a clay mirror frame step by step

Step 1: Trace your shape

Place the mirror on baking paper and trace around it. Draw a second line 3 to 4 cm outside the first. That outer line is your frame edge. Round, arch or scalloped all work.

Step 2: Roll a slab

Knead the clay for a minute so it is soft. Roll it out to about 8 mm thick. Thinner than that and the frame will warp as it dries. Keep the thickness even.

Step 3: Cut the frame

Lay the paper template over the slab. Cut the outer edge first, then the inner circle. Lift the inner circle out. Smooth the cut edges with a damp finger.

Step 4: Add a lip for the mirror

Roll a thin coil, about pencil thickness. Press it around the inner edge on the back of the frame. Score both surfaces and add a little water before joining. This lip holds the mirror in place later.

Step 5: Decorate

Now the fun part. Press a fork for lines. Use a bottle cap for circles. Pinch small clay balls around the rim for a scalloped look. Keep the decoration on the front only so the back stays flat against the wall.

Step 6: Make a hanging hole

Poke a hole at the top of the frame with a pencil, about 1 cm from the edge. Or press a wire loop into the back before it dries.

Step 7: Dry flat and slow

Leave the frame flat on the baking paper for two to three days. Flip it on day two so both sides dry evenly. Keep it away from direct AC vents, which dry one side too fast and cause cracks. See our guide on why air-dry clay cracks if you hit trouble.

Step 8: Sand, paint and seal

Lightly sand rough edges. Paint the front in one or two coats. Terracotta, cream and teal are easy colours to match. Once dry, seal the whole frame front and back. Then glue the mirror into the back, resting on the lip, and let the glue cure overnight.

Design ideas

Try a sunburst with short coil rays. Try a Moroccan arch with a scalloped top. Try a plain thick ring painted a single deep colour for a modern look. For more surface ideas, read how to add texture to air-dry clay.

Common questions

Will the frame hold the weight of the mirror?

Yes, for small mirrors up to about 15 cm. Keep the slab 8 mm thick and use strong craft glue. For bigger mirrors, make the frame and mount it on a wooden backing board.

Can I hang it in the bathroom?

Only if it is fully sealed and the room has an extractor fan. Air-dry clay does not like steam. A bedroom or hallway wall is safer.

Can I use this method for a tray or a plate?

Use it for decor pieces like a wall plate or a shelf tray for keys and prayer beads. Air-dry clay is never for food or drinks.

How much clay does the kit include?

The Solo Kit at AED 198 has enough for a mirror frame plus a small matching piece. The Duo Kit at AED 228 and Group Kit at AED 288 include more clay and tools for two to four people.
