Why Is My Air Dry Clay Cracking? UAE Fixes

You shaped something you liked. You left it to dry. You came back and found a crack running across it. It is one of the most common frustrations with air dry clay, and in a warm, dry UAE climate it happens more than people expect.

The good news is that cracks have clear causes. Once you know why air dry clay cracks, you can prevent almost all of them. This guide explains the reasons and gives you simple fixes.

Why is my air dry clay cracking?

Cracks come from stress inside the clay as it dries. When one part of a piece dries and shrinks faster than another, the clay pulls against itself and splits. Almost every crack traces back to one of the causes below.

It dried too fast

This is the number one cause in the UAE. A blast of cold air conditioning or a spot of direct sun dries the outside long before the inside. The surface shrinks, the inside does not, and it cracks. Slow, even drying is the answer. Keep the piece away from direct air conditioning and harsh sun. Our guide on how long air dry clay takes to dry explains a good pace.

The walls were uneven

If one part of the piece is thick and another is thin, they dry at different speeds and pull apart. Aim for even thickness throughout. This also makes the piece stronger overall.

The joins were weak

Cracks often appear where two pieces meet. If a handle or base was not joined properly, it separates as it dries. Score both surfaces, add a little water to make a slip, and press firmly. See our guide on how to join air dry clay pieces.

There was trapped air

Air bubbles inside the clay expand and crack the surface. Knead the clay well before you shape it to push the air out. A smooth, well-kneaded ball cracks far less.

How to fix cracks that already appeared

A crack is not the end of your piece. If it is still slightly damp, smooth a little fresh clay or a soft clay slip into the crack with your finger, then let it dry slowly. For a fully dry piece, work a small amount of clay paste into the gap, let it dry, then sand it smooth. Once repaired, seal the piece for a clean finish. Our guide on how to seal air dry clay shows you how.

Keep your finished pieces as decor. Air dry clay is not made for food or drink. Use your repaired piece for bukhoor, prayer beads, keys, candles, or shelf styling. A small fixed crack disappears once sanded and sealed.

Frequently asked questions

How do I stop air dry clay from cracking?

Knead well to remove air, keep the walls even, join pieces properly, and dry slowly away from direct air conditioning and sun. Slow, even drying prevents most cracks.

Can I fix a crack after the clay is dry?

Yes. Work a little clay paste into the crack, let it dry, then sand it smooth and seal the piece. Small cracks vanish once repaired and finished.

Does the UAE climate make cracking worse?

It can. Dry air and strong air conditioning speed up surface drying, which raises the risk. The fix is simple. Slow the drying down and keep the piece out of direct airflow and sun.

Why does my clay crack only at the joins?

That points to weak joins. Score both surfaces, use a clay slip, and press firmly when attaching parts. A proper join holds as the piece dries.

Ready to make something that lasts

Cracks are almost always preventable. Knead well, keep it even, join with care, and dry it slow. Do that and your pieces come out clean and whole.

Fill a crack with slip

Mix a little clay with water into a thick paste (slip). Press it into the crack, smooth it flush with a damp finger, then let it dry slowly. Sand lightly before painting. If the crack was shallow, the repair will barely show once painted. Allow a full 24 to 48 hours before sealing.
