How to Make Clay Fridge Magnets at Home: A Simple Step by Step Guide

Your fridge is covered in takeaway menus and one sad magnet from a mall kiosk. Meanwhile the prettiest magnets you have seen were handmade ones at a friend's place. Good news. Clay fridge magnets are one of the easiest projects in all of pottery.

Here is exactly how to make them at home, no kiln and no wheel needed.

Why clay magnets are the perfect first project

They are small, so they dry fast. They are flat, so they will not crack easily. And every one is useful the moment it is done. In the UAE, where indoor hobbies rule for most of the year, a magnet-making afternoon is an easy win for adults and kids alike.

What you need

Air-dry clay, a few shaping tools, acrylic paints, a brush, and small magnets from any stationery shop or online store. The Sawa pottery kit covers the clay, tools and paints in one box, delivered free anywhere in the UAE. The Solo Kit at AED 198 makes a full batch of magnets with plenty of clay left over for a dish or small pot.

Step by step: your first batch of magnets

Step 1: roll the clay flat

Roll a piece of clay to about half a centimetre thick. Thinner than that and the magnet may snap. Thicker and it gets heavy for the magnet on the back.

Step 2: cut your shapes

Use a cup rim for circles or cut freehand with a tool. Stars, crescents, little coffee pots, tiny cacti, initials. Keep each shape smaller than your palm.

Step 3: smooth the edges

Dip a fingertip in water and run it around each edge. This removes cracks before they start and gives a clean finish.

Step 4: let them dry

Lay the shapes flat on baking paper. Flip them after the first day so both sides dry evenly. Small pieces take 24 to 48 hours in UAE indoor conditions.

Step 5: paint and seal

Paint your designs with acrylics. Let them dry fully, then add a coat of sealer or clear varnish for a finished look.

Step 6: attach the magnet

Glue a small magnet to the back with strong craft glue. Let it cure overnight before it goes on the fridge.

Common questions

Do I need to bake the clay?

No. Air-dry clay hardens on its own. No oven, no kiln.

Why did my magnet curl while drying?

It dried too fast on one side. Dry pieces away from direct AC airflow and flip them daily.

Can kids make these?

Yes. This is one of the best starter projects for children. A parent should handle the glue step.

How many magnets can I make from one kit?

A dozen or more, with clay to spare for a bigger piece like a trinket dish.
