Your watch ends up in the same place every night. On the bedside table. Under a book. Sometimes on the bathroom sink. Here is how to make a clay watch stand that gives it a proper home, in one evening, with no wheel and no kiln.
Why a watch stand is worth making yourself
Shop bought stands in the UAE are either cheap plastic or expensive leather. Neither looks like it belongs to you. A hand made clay stand is different. It matches your room. It holds one watch or two. And it took you an evening, not a trip to the mall. In a Dubai or Abu Dhabi apartment where every surface counts, a small stand that keeps one thing in one place is a quiet win.
The short answer
You need air dry clay, a rolling tool, a knife, paint and varnish. All of that comes in a Sawa pottery kit. Delivery is free across the UAE. Shape a base, add a curved arm, dry it overnight, then paint and seal. Total hands on time is about ninety minutes.

How to make a clay watch stand, step by step
Step 1: Roll the base
Take a ball of clay about the size of a lime. Roll it flat to around 1 cm thick. Cut a rounded rectangle roughly 10 cm by 7 cm. This is the base. Smooth the edges with a damp finger.
Step 2: Make the arm
Roll a second piece into a thick coil, about 2 cm across and 12 cm long. Bend it into a gentle arch, like a small bridge. This is where the watch strap will rest. Keep the curve soft so the strap does not crease.
Step 3: Join the pieces
Scratch the two ends of the arch and the two spots on the base where they will sit. Add a little water. Press the arch onto the base and blend the seams with your thumb. Add a tiny coil of clay around each joint for strength. This is the step people rush. Do not rush it.
Step 4: Add a tray
Optional but useful. Press a shallow dip into one side of the base with your thumb. That is where rings or cufflinks go. Keep it shallow so it dries evenly.
Step 5: Dry overnight
Leave the stand on a flat surface, away from direct sun and the AC vent. Air dry clay hardens in about 24 hours. Turn it over once halfway so the base dries too.
Step 6: Paint and seal
Paint the base one colour and the arch another. Terracotta and cream look good together. Let the paint dry, then brush on two coats of varnish. The varnish protects the surface from daily handling.
What you end up with
A stand that holds one watch on the arch and a couple of small items in the tray. It sits by the bed or on a dresser. It is decor for the things you take off at night. It also makes a good gift for a partner, a brother or a father, made by you and finished in a weekend. Common questions
Will the arch hold the weight of a metal watch?
Yes, if the coil is at least 2 cm thick and the joints are blended well. Air dry clay is strong once cured. Give it the full 24 hours before you use it.
Do I need a kiln?
No. Sawa uses air dry clay. It cures on its own. Nothing to bake, nothing to fire.
Can I make more than one from a kit?
The Solo Kit has enough clay for the watch stand plus a small dish or two. The Duo Kit at AED 228 lets two people each make their own.
What if the arch cracks while drying?
Small cracks can be filled with a slip of clay and water, then smoothed. To avoid cracks, keep the clay away from the AC and let it dry slowly.
