Stars are simple, graceful, and easy to love. Here is how to make a clay star decor piece at home, with air dry clay and no special equipment.
You do not need a wheel or a kiln. You only need clay, a few tools, and a free evening. A Sawa Couple Kit has enough for two people. It costs AED 228 and delivery is free across the UAE.
Why Stars Suit UAE Homes
Stars appear everywhere in Islamic art. Eight pointed stars decorate mosques, doors, and tiles across the region. A clay star feels at home on a majlis shelf or a bedroom wall. It looks traditional and modern at the same time.
It is also a lovely activity for two. Evenings in the UAE are cooler in the colder months. Sitting at the table with a partner, a friend, or a sibling and shaping stars is a calm way to spend them.
What You Need
The Sawa Couple Kit includes air dry clay, wooden tools, paint, brushes, and sealant for two people. You also need a rolling pin or smooth bottle, a knife, and a little water.

Step by Step: Making the Star
Step 1: Roll a slab
Roll the clay flat to about six millimetres thick. Use two pencils as guides on either side. This keeps the thickness even and stops warping.
Step 2: Cut the star
Draw a star on paper first and cut it out. Lay the paper on the clay. Trace around it with a knife. Lift away the extra clay. A five pointed star is easy. An eight pointed star looks more Islamic.
Step 3: Add a hole
If you want to hang it, press a small hole near one point with a straw or tool. Make it a little larger than you think you need. The clay shrinks as it dries.
Step 4: Add texture
Press tiny dots, lines, or patterns into the surface. A wooden tool works well. Try a small circle in the centre with lines out to each point. Our guide on how to add texture to air dry clay has more ideas.
Step 5: Smooth the edges
Run a damp finger along every edge. Soft edges look better and feel better. Fix any small cracks with a dab of water.
Step 6: Dry flat, then paint
Place the star on a flat board. Let it dry for one to two days. Turn it over after the first day. Paint it gold, teal, cream, or cherry red. Seal it with the sealant when dry. See how to seal air dry clay for the final step.
What You Get at the End
A handmade star for a wall, shelf, or window. Tie it with string and hang it near a candle holder. Place it next to your keys tray. It is a decor piece only, made to be admired.

Common Questions
Can two people share one kit?
Yes. That is what the Couple Kit is for. There is enough clay for two people to make several stars each.
Will the star warp?
Not if you roll an even slab and dry it flat. Turn it once after the first day.
Do I need a kiln?
No. Air dry clay hardens by itself. No oven. No wheel.
Is delivery free?
