How to Make a Clay Oryx Figurine at Home (UAE Guide)

The Arabian oryx is the national animal of the UAE. Tall horns. Pale coat. A quiet kind of pride.

This guide shows you how to make a clay oryx figurine at home. No wheel. No kiln. Just clay and a free afternoon.

Why an oryx makes a meaningful project

The oryx once nearly vanished from the wild. Today it roams protected reserves in the UAE. It stands for resilience and heritage.

A clay oryx is a lovely piece of home decor. It also makes a thoughtful gift. Think of National Day, a farewell or a welcome to a new home.

The shape is friendly to beginners. A simple body, four legs and two long horns. You can finish it in a single sitting.

How to make your clay oryx, step by step

1. Shape the body

Roll a ball of clay. Stretch it into a smooth oval. Keep it slightly thicker at the chest.

2. Add the legs

Roll four short logs. Attach them under the body. Blend the joins with a little water. Keep the legs straight and slim.

3. Form the neck and head

Pinch one end of the body upward into a short, strong neck. Shape the top into a narrow head. The oryx has a long, flat face.

4. Make the horns

This is the star feature. Roll two thin, long ropes. Taper each one to a point. Attach them to the head so they sweep gently backward. Press firmly at the base.

Tip: slightly thicker horns are less likely to snap once dry.

5. Add the ears and face

Pinch two small ears. Press in two dents for eyes. Draw a soft line for the mouth.

6. Add the tail

Roll a short thin rope. Attach it at the back. Keep it small.

7. Dry, paint and seal

Let your oryx dry for one to two days. Paint it warm cream with soft brown legs and a darker face mask. Seal with varnish for a smooth finish.

What the experience gives you

You get a focused, relaxed afternoon. You also get a piece with real meaning. Every oryx is slightly different, just like the real animals.

Your oryx is decor only. Place it on a shelf. Set it near a candle, a tray of keys or a bukhoor burner. It looks lovely beside a string of prayer beads.

More Emirati animal projects are waiting. Try our guides to a clay camel figurine and a clay falcon figurine. Together they make a proud desert set.

Your questions answered

Will the horns break?

Not if you make them thick at the base and press firmly. Handle your oryx by the body, not the horns.

Do I need clay experience?

No. The guide in your box shows each step.

Do I need a kiln?

No. Sawa clay is air-dry. It hardens at room temperature.

Is delivery free?
