The DEWA bill, the Emirates ID renewal letter, the school circular, two postcards from home. They live in a pile on the console table, and the pile grows every week. Here is how to make a clay letter holder at home with air-dry clay. A standing slotted piece that keeps the mail upright, looks good on the hallway shelf, and takes one evening. No wheel, no kiln.
Why a letter holder is worth making
A letter holder is a slab project with a small twist. Two or three upright panels joined to a flat base. It teaches you how to join clay properly, which is the skill behind every box, vase and planter you will make later. And unlike a pen holder, which we covered in a separate guide, this one has to stand wide and stay balanced. That makes it a satisfying build.
In a UAE apartment, where the entrance is often a narrow corridor, a slim standing letter holder earns its place. It holds the mail you need to act on. It also takes the odd delivery slip and the parking card without falling over.

How to make a clay letter holder step by step
1. Plan the pieces
You need one base and three upright panels. Base: 16 cm by 8 cm. Front panel: 16 cm by 7 cm. Middle panel: 16 cm by 9 cm. Back panel: 16 cm by 11 cm. The stepped heights let you see every letter at a glance. Cut paper templates first.
2. Roll the slab
Roll the clay out on a cloth to about 7 mm thick. Keep it even. Cut all four pieces using the templates and a knife held straight up. Smooth the cut edges with a damp finger.
3. Score and slip
This is the step that matters. On the base, scratch three parallel lines with a fork where the panels will stand, about 2 cm apart. Scratch the bottom edge of each panel too. Brush a little water on both scratched surfaces. This makes the clay tacky so the join holds.
4. Stand the panels
Press the back panel onto its scratched line first. Hold it for ten seconds. Roll a thin snake of clay and press it along the join on both sides, smoothing it in with your finger. Repeat for the middle and front panels. Check from the side that all three stand straight.
5. Strengthen the corners
Roll two more thin snakes. Press them into the inside corners where each panel meets the base. Smooth them flat. This turns a weak right angle into a strong curve. Wipe away any excess with a damp cloth.
6. Dry slowly
Leave the holder on a flat cloth for 48 to 72 hours. Joined pieces dry slower than flat ones. Keep it away from the AC stream and direct sun. Cover it loosely with a plastic bag for the first day so the joins dry at the same pace as the panels.
7. Paint and seal
Paint the outside one colour and the inside another. Terracotta outside with cream inside is a classic. Add a thin cherry red line along the top edges for a finish that looks bought. Two coats of varnish everywhere, including underneath.

Common questions
Will the panels fall off after drying?
Not if you scored, wetted and reinforced the joins. Most failures come from pressing dry clay onto dry clay. Scratch, wet, press, then add the snake. That sequence holds.
Can I make it bigger for A4 envelopes?
Yes. Take the base to 24 cm wide and the panels to 24 cm. Go to 9 mm thick so it stays rigid. You may need the Duo Kit at AED 228 for the extra clay.
Is it a decor piece only?
Yes. It holds paper, keys, cards and small decor items. Like all air-dry clay pieces, keep it away from food and drink.
How heavy will it be?
About the weight of a hardback book. Heavy enough not to tip when full of mail, light enough to move for dusting.
