If you searched how to make a clay cable tidy, you probably have a charger that keeps sliding off the desk and a nest of wires behind the monitor. A small clay cable tidy fixes both. It is a solid block with grooves that hold each cable in place. It takes about thirty minutes to shape and a few days to dry.
This guide uses air-dry clay. No wheel, no kiln, no special tools. Just your hands, a kit and a desk that finally looks calm.
Why a clay cable tidy makes sense in the UAE
Most of us work from a desk in a bedroom or a corner of the living room. Cables show. Plastic clips look cheap and peel off in the heat. A clay tidy is heavy enough to stay put, looks like a small piece of decor and never gets handled roughly, so it lasts.
Air-dry clay also cures well in dry, air-conditioned rooms. A dense block like this needs patience, but the result is solid.
The answer: one kit, one weekend
The Sawa Pottery Kit has everything for this project. Clay, sculpting tools, paints and a sealing finish. The Solo Kit is AED 198 and has enough clay for a cable tidy plus two or three other desk pieces. Free delivery UAE-wide.

How to make a clay cable tidy step by step
Step 1: Measure your cables
Count the cables you want to hold. Two or three is typical. Measure the thickness of the thickest one. Your grooves need to be slightly wider than that so the cable slides in and out.
Step 2: Shape the block
Knead a fist-sized lump of clay until it is smooth. Form it into a low rounded bar about 10 cm long, 4 cm deep and 3 cm tall. Press the base flat on the table so it sits without rocking.
Step 3: Cut the grooves
Use the flat tool from your kit to press a groove from the top of the block down about 1.5 cm. Space the grooves 2 to 3 cm apart. Widen each one gently with a pen or a thick straw until a cable fits with a little room to spare.
Step 4: Round the edges
Smooth every edge with a damp finger. Rounded edges will not chip and cables will not snag. Check the base is still flat.
Step 5: Add a detail
Press a pattern into the front with a tool or the edge of a coin. Or leave it plain. A simple geometric line looks good on a desk.
Step 6: Dry slowly
Leave it on a board away from direct AC airflow. A block this thick needs four to six days. Turn it once a day so it dries evenly and does not crack.
Step 7: Sand, paint and seal
Sand any rough spots lightly. Paint with the colours in your kit. Terracotta with a cream top looks clean. Seal the whole piece, including inside the grooves, with the finish from the box.
Step 8: Add grip
Stick two small felt pads or a strip of rubber under the base. This stops it sliding on a glass or glossy desk.
Once you have made one, the same slab-and-groove method works for other desk pieces. See our guides on how to make a clay phone stand and how to make a clay remote holder. New to finishing? Read how to seal air dry clay first.
Frequently asked questions
Will the grooves shrink as it dries?
A little. Air-dry clay shrinks a few percent. Cut the grooves slightly wider than you think you need. You can widen a dry groove with a small file if needed.
Is it safe next to a laptop?
Yes. Sealed clay does not shed dust and stays cool. Keep it away from vents so it is not in the path of hot exhaust air.
Can I make a longer one for a TV unit?
Yes. Make the bar 20 cm long and add more grooves. Give it an extra two days to dry because of the size.
Can I use it for anything else?
It also holds pens, a watch strap or prayer beads. Keep it to decor and desk items only. Sawa pieces are not for food or drink.
Finish the desk
A cable tidy is the fastest win for a messy desk. With the rest of the Solo Kit you can add a matching pen holder and a small dish for keys. Same clay, same colours, one calm corner.
