How to Make a Clay Moon and Star Wall Decor

Terracotta and teal illustration for a clay moon and star wall decor guide

Want to know how to make a clay moon and star wall decor piece? It is easier than it looks. You need clay, a rolling tool and about an hour. No wheel. No kiln. The result is a soft, handmade accent for any bare wall.

Why a moon and star piece works in UAE homes

The crescent moon and the star belong to the region. They feel warm and familiar. They suit a majlis wall, a bedroom or a child's room. They also look lovely in the evening, when lamps are low.

Store bought wall decor can feel generic. A handmade version has texture and charm. It also costs far less than a framed print from a design shop.

What you need

The Sawa home pottery kit includes air-dry clay and basic tools. You also need a little twine or thin cord for hanging, plus paint if you want colour. That is all.

Step by step

Step 1: Roll the clay

Take a lump of clay the size of a fist. Press it flat. Roll it to about half a centimetre thick. Keep it even so the piece dries without warping.

Step 2: Cut the shapes

Cut one large crescent moon. Cut two or three small stars. Use a paper template if you want clean edges. Trace it with a knife or the cutting tool from the kit.

Step 3: Smooth the edges

Dip a finger in a little water. Run it along each edge. This removes rough bits and softens the shape.

Step 4: Add the hanging holes

Press a straw or the tip of a tool through the top of the moon. Do the same on each star. Make the holes slightly larger than your cord. Clay shrinks a little as it dries.

Step 5: Add texture

Press small dots or lines into the surface. A pattern of tiny holes looks like a starry sky. Keep the design simple. Simple reads well on a wall.

Step 6: Dry slowly

Lay the pieces flat on a clean surface. Leave them in a cool, shaded spot for one to two days. Turn them over once after the first day. Slow drying prevents cracks, which matter in dry UAE air. Our guide to clay wall art has more drying tips.

Step 7: Paint and hang

Paint the moon cream or gold. Paint the stars deep teal or terracotta. Let the paint dry fully. Thread cord through the holes and tie each star at a different height. Hang the moon at the top.

Styling ideas

Hang the set above a bed or a sofa. Pair it with a clay lantern on a shelf below. Add a bukhoor burner beside it for a calm corner. Keep the colours soft and the wall clear around it.

For a child's room, make smaller stars in bright colours. For a majlis, go with cream and gold for a quiet, elegant feel.

Common questions

Do I need to fire the clay?

No. Air-dry clay hardens on its own at room temperature.

Can I make this as a beginner?

Yes. The shapes are simple and forgiving. It is a great first project.

Will it crack?

Not if it dries slowly and evenly. Keep it out of direct sun and away from air conditioning vents.

How strong is the finished piece?

It is solid enough for wall decor. Handle it gently and keep it away from water. For more ideas, see how to make clay palm tree decor.
