How to Make a Clay Fish Figurine at Home (UAE Guide)

How to make a clay fish figurine: terracotta geometric pattern with teal stripe and cream panel

This is how to make a clay fish figurine at home. All you need is air-dry clay, a few tools and a free afternoon. No wheel. No kiln. A fish is a flat, friendly shape that anyone can nail on the first try.

You want a craft that feels fun and looks good when it is done. A colourful fish does both.

Why a fish suits UAE shelves

We live beside the Gulf. Fish are part of the coast, the old pearl towns and the souq. They feel familiar here. A clay fish also brings colour to a plain shelf.

It works for kids too. Children can paint scales in any colour they like. Every fish ends up different.

Place it near a candle, beside your keys or next to your prayer beads. It is decor only. It simply makes the room feel alive.

The answer: the Sawa kit

Sawa is a home pottery kit made for the UAE. One box has the clay, tools, paints and clear steps. The clay air-dries. You do not need a kiln or an oven.

How to make a clay fish figurine, step by step

1. Roll a thick slab

Roll the clay out to about one and a half centimetres. A thicker fish stands up better and resists cracks.

2. Cut the body

Shape an oval with a pointed nose. Add a fan-shaped tail at the back. You can cut it out with a blunt knife or shape it by hand.

3. Add fins

Roll tiny teardrops for the top and side fins. Attach them with a dab of water. Blend the seams with your finger.

4. Make the scales

Press the end of a pen cap into the body in overlapping curves. This gives you a clean scale pattern. Work from tail to head.

5. Add the face

Press in a round eye with a tool. Add a small curved line for the mouth. Keep it simple.

6. Give it a base

To make it stand, press the fish into a small rolled clay wedge. Smooth the join. Or lay it flat and use it as wall decor.

7. Dry and paint

Leave the fish in a cool, dry spot for 24 to 48 hours. Then paint the body in teal and terracotta. Add cream scales and a cherry red fin. Finish with a clear coat.

What the experience feels like

It feels playful. You start with a lump and end with a character. Many people make three or four in one sitting. A small school of fish on a shelf looks great.
