You have seen them in a boutique in Alserkal or on a balcony in Jumeirah. Little clay discs and beads on a string, catching the breeze and clinking softly. You want one for your own balcony or window. Here is how to make clay wind chimes at home with air-dry clay, no wheel and no kiln.
Why wind chimes are a good first clay project
A wind chime is a set of small, flat, simple shapes. Discs, leaves, crescents, beads. No walls to keep straight, no rim to even out. If one piece cracks, you make another. That makes it one of the most forgiving air-dry clay projects there is, and one of the prettiest when it is done.
In the UAE it also solves a real problem. A shaded balcony in October, November or February is the best room in the house, and a handmade chime turns it into a place you want to sit.

How to make clay wind chimes step by step
1. Roll the clay flat
Take a piece the size of a lemon. Roll it out on a cloth to about 5 mm thick. Even thickness matters more than shape. Too thin and it snaps. Too thick and it thuds instead of chimes.
2. Cut the shapes
Cut 8 to 12 pieces. Circles from a bottle cap. Leaves and crescents with a knife. Small rectangles for a clean modern look. Mix sizes so the chime has rhythm. Roll a few small beads by hand to space the pieces on the string.
3. Make the holes
Push a straw through the top of each piece while the clay is soft. Make the hole a little bigger than you think. Clay shrinks slightly as it dries and thread needs room. Poke the beads through the middle with a skewer.
4. Add texture
Press a leaf, a lace scrap or a stamp into the surface. Flower and letter stamps work well for a name or a date. Keep one side smooth for paint.
5. Dry flat
Lay the pieces on a flat cloth for 24 to 48 hours. Turn them over halfway so they do not curl. Do not dry them in direct sun or the AC stream. Slow and even is the rule.
6. Paint and seal
Paint both sides. Terracotta, cream and a touch of teal look at home in a UAE apartment. Let the paint dry. Then varnish every surface, including inside the holes. This is what protects the chime from humidity.
7. String it
Cut 4 to 6 lengths of thread. Tie a piece at the bottom of each, add a bead, then another piece, spacing them so they just touch when they swing. Tie the threads to your stick or ring at different heights. Hang it and listen.

Common questions
Can the chime hang outside in the UAE?
On a covered balcony, yes. Air-dry clay is not fired, so keep it out of rain and out of direct summer sun. Bring it in during sandstorms. Varnish helps with humidity but is not waterproof.
Does air-dry clay actually chime?
It gives a soft, low clink rather than a metallic ring. Thinner pieces sound brighter. Add a few beads for a gentle rattle.
How do I stop the pieces cracking?
Keep them the same thickness, dry them slowly and away from the AC, and turn them over once. Small hairline cracks can be filled with a little wet clay before painting.
Is it a decor piece only?
Yes. Like all air-dry clay pieces, keep it away from food and drink. It is made to hang, not to hold.
