Clay mushrooms are small, cute, and very easy. If you want to learn how to make a clay mushroom figurine, this is the perfect first project. It takes about an hour, and it looks great on a shelf.
You do not need a wheel or a kiln. You only need air-dry clay and a few simple tools. The Sawa home pottery kit has everything, from AED 198, with free delivery across the UAE.
Why this project is a good starter
Many beginners start with a bowl. Bowls can be tricky. Walls collapse, and rims crack. A mushroom is much kinder.
It has two simple shapes. A rounded cap and a small stem. You only need to roll, press, and smooth. That teaches the core skills of hand building.
In the UAE, there is another reason. Home projects are perfect for hot days and cool evenings alike. You can do it at the dining table without any mess.
What you need
The Sawa pottery kit includes all of this:
- Air-dry clay
- Simple shaping tools
- Paint and a brush
- Clear instructions
You will also want a small cup of water and a clean surface. That is all.
How to make a clay mushroom figurine, step by step
Step 1: Divide the clay
Take a golf ball sized piece of clay. Split it into two parts. Use about two thirds for the cap. Use one third for the stem.
Step 2: Shape the cap
Roll the larger piece into a ball. Press your thumb into the bottom. Gently widen it into a dome. Keep the edges smooth and even.
Step 3: Shape the stem
Roll the smaller piece into a short log. Make it slightly wider at the base so it stands up. Flatten the bottom against the table.
Step 4: Join the pieces
Scratch small lines on top of the stem. Add a little water. Press the cap on firmly. Smooth the join with a fingertip. For more help, see how to join air-dry clay pieces.
Step 5: Add details
Press small dots onto the cap with a tool. Add a few lines to the stem. Keep it playful. Small mistakes make it look handmade.
Step 6: Dry and paint
Leave it to air dry for a day or two. Turn it once so it dries evenly. Then paint it. Warm red with cream dots looks lovely. For tips, read how to paint patterns on pottery and how to varnish air-dry clay.
Where to place your mushroom
These pieces are decor only. Put a small group on a bookshelf. Place one beside a candle holder. Set one on a desk. Add a trio near your key dish at the entrance.
You can also make a few in different sizes. A tiny set looks great together. They also make a sweet gift.

Tips for a better mushroom
Keep your fingers slightly damp while smoothing. Too much water makes the clay sticky, so use only a little. A damp fingertip removes fingerprints and gives a clean finish.
Make the cap a little thicker than you think you need. Thin edges dry fast and may crack. A soft, rounded edge also looks friendlier.
Try different shapes for variety. Make a tall, thin mushroom with a narrow cap. Make a short, wide one with a big dome. Group them in odd numbers, such as three or five, for a natural look.
Once painted and dry, brush on a thin coat of sealer if you want a soft shine. Always let each layer dry before adding the next. Patience gives the best result, and it is half the fun of the craft.
Clay mushroom questions answered
Do I need a kiln?
No. Air-dry clay hardens at room temperature. Nothing needs to be fired.
How long does it take to dry?
Usually one to two days. Thicker pieces can take a little longer. Read our drying time guide to be sure.
What if it cracks?
Small cracks are easy to fix. Fill them with a little wet clay and smooth. See why air-dry clay cracks.
Can kids make this?
Yes. It is a lovely family project. The Group Kit at AED 288 is made for up to four people.
