How to Make a Clay Handprint Keepsake at Home in the UAE

How to make a clay handprint keepsake: bold terracotta and cream geometric pattern illustration

Your child's hands will never be this small again. You know it. You just do not have a way to keep it. Photos are fine. A real handprint in clay is better.

Here is how to make a clay handprint keepsake at home in the UAE. No wheel. No kiln. Just an evening and a few simple steps.

Why a handprint keepsake is hard to find here

Most handprint kits are imported. They arrive late, crack in transit or need an oven you may not want to use. Many UAE families live in apartments with small kitchens and busy weeks. Nobody wants a messy project that needs special equipment.

School holidays and family weekends also ask for an activity that is calm and indoors. Heat, traffic and screen time all push in the same direction. A clay handprint gives the whole family something to do together and something to keep.

The easy answer: air-dry clay

The Sawa pottery kit uses air-dry clay. It hardens on its own. You do not fire it. You do not bake it. You press, smooth, wait and paint.

The Group Kit is AED 288 and suits up to four people. That is enough clay for a handprint from each child, plus a bonus piece for you. Free delivery across the UAE.

How to make a clay handprint keepsake, step by step

1. Prepare your space

Cover the table. Put a small bowl of water beside you for smoothing. Wash and dry little hands first. Dry skin leaves a cleaner print.

2. Roll the clay flat

Take a ball of clay about the size of a lemon. Roll it out until it is about one centimetre thick. Make it larger than the hand. Smooth the top with a damp finger.

3. Press the hand

Spread the fingers. Press the palm down firmly and evenly. Press each fingertip too. Hold for a slow count of three. Lift straight up. Do not drag.

4. Cut the shape

Use the tool from your kit to trim around the print. A rounded square works well. So does a circle. Smooth the edges with a damp finger.

5. Add a hanging hole

Make a small hole near the top with the end of a tool. Make it before the clay dries. You can thread a ribbon through it later.

6. Let it dry

Leave it flat on a clean surface. It needs a day or two to dry. Turn it over once if the edges curl. Keep it away from direct sun.

7. Paint and finish

Paint the background in a bold colour. Add the name and the year with a fine brush. Seal it once the paint is dry. Our guide to sealing air dry clay shows how.

What to make besides the print

A handprint is lovely on its own. It also turns into other useful decor. Press a small hand into a round tray. It becomes a place for keys by the door. Press a hand into a thicker slab. It becomes a candle base. A tiny footprint can sit beside a prayer bead stand.

All pieces are decor only. They are made for shelves, entryways and bedrooms.

Tips for a clean print

Work with a calm child. A short rest beforehand helps. Keep a damp cloth ready for sticky fingers. If the first print is smudged, ball the clay, roll it again and start fresh. Clay is forgiving.

Add a date on the back with a pointed tool. Years from now, you will be glad you did.

Who it works for

A new baby is the classic case. Toddlers love it too. Older children enjoy adding their names. Grandparents treasure a handprint more than most gifts. Make a set across the years and line them up on a shelf.

Solo parent or only one child? The Solo Kit at AED 198 is plenty. A couple making one for a new arrival can choose the Couple Kit at AED 228.

Common questions

Can a baby do this?

Babies have tiny, curled hands. It takes patience. Press gently and work fast. Ask a second adult to help. Always supervise little ones around clay and tools.

Will the print crack?

Not if you keep the clay about one centimetre thick and dry it slowly. Thin edges dry too fast. Follow the drying steps in the guide.

Do I need an oven or kiln?

No. The clay air-dries. There is nothing to fire or bake.

How long does it take?

The pressing takes about twenty minutes. The clay then dries for a day or two. Painting takes another short session.
