There is a stretch of wall in most homes that never gets solved. Too narrow for a picture. Too bare to ignore.
A hanging garland fills it in an afternoon, and it costs almost nothing. Here is how to make a clay garland at home, with no wheel and no kiln.
Why a clay garland beats what you can buy
Shop bought wall hangings here are either mass produced macrame or printed MDF. Both look fine from across the room and cheap up close.
A clay garland is different because every piece carries a handprint. The shapes are slightly uneven. The colours are yours. It reads as made rather than bought, which is the whole point of putting something on a wall.
It is also the most forgiving beginner project there is. You make many small pieces instead of one big one, so a bad piece costs you thirty seconds, not the afternoon.
What you need
Air dry clay, a rolling tool, a skewer or thin tool for the holes, paint, a brush, sealant and a length of cotton cord. All of it is in a Sawa kit.

How to make a clay garland, step by step
Step 1: decide the length first
Measure the wall or the shelf edge before you touch clay. A typical garland runs 80cm to 120cm of cord with nine to fifteen pieces on it. Knowing the number stops you making forty beads and using eleven.
Step 2: knead and roll out
Knead a fist sized piece for two minutes until it is soft and there are no air pockets. Roll it flat to about 6mm thick. Even thickness matters more than perfect shapes, because thin spots crack as they dry.
Step 3: cut the shapes
Cut simple forms. Circles, diamonds, teardrops, small arches. Use the end of a tool, a bottle cap, or just your fingers.
Repetition is what makes a garland look intentional. Pick two shapes and alternate them, or use one shape in three sizes. Mixing seven different shapes looks like a mistake.
Step 4: make the holes
This is the step people forget. Push a skewer through each piece about 8mm from the top, then widen the hole slightly by wiggling it. Clay shrinks a little as it dries, so a tight hole becomes an impossible hole.
For a piece that hangs flat against the wall, one hole at the top is enough. For a vertical chain, put a hole at the top and the bottom.
Step 5: texture while it is soft
Press a fork, a comb, a bit of lace or the edge of a tool into the surface. Simple repeated lines catch light well and cost you nothing. Do this now, because dry clay does not take an impression.
Step 6: dry flat and slow
Lay the pieces flat on a board and leave them 48 to 72 hours. Turn them once a day so both faces dry at the same rate.
Keep them out of direct sun. UAE heat dries the outside far faster than the inside, and that is exactly what makes flat clay curl and crack.
Step 7: paint, seal, then string
Two thin coats of paint, not one thick one. Terracotta, cream, deep teal and a single cherry red accent piece is a palette that works in almost any room. Seal everything, let it cure, then thread the cord.
Tie a small knot on each side of every piece so nothing slides into a clump at the bottom. That one habit is the difference between a garland and a tangle.
Questions people ask
Do I need a kiln or a pottery wheel?
Neither. Air dry clay hardens in open air on your own table over a few days.
How thick should the pieces be?
About 6mm. Thinner pieces snap when you string them. Much thicker and they get heavy and take a week to dry.
Will the pieces break if they knock together?
Sealed air dry clay is sturdier than people expect, but it is not stoneware. Hang the garland where it is not in a doorway or behind a curtain that moves.
How long does the whole project take?
About an hour of making, three days of drying, then an hour to paint, seal and string. Call it four days from box to wall.
Is this good for kids?
It is one of the best projects for a mixed age table. Cutting shapes is easy enough for a six year old, and a teenager can take the texture and colour work as far as they want.
What else can I make with the same kit?
Decor pieces. Key dishes, candle holders, prayer bead holders, bukhoor burner stands, wall hooks and small shelf sculptures.
Where to hang it
The narrow wall between two doors. Above a bed. Across the front of a shelf. Down one side of a mirror. A garland works best where a framed picture would look cramped.
Make a second in the same palette for another room and the whole house starts to look connected.
