Step by step: your clay flamingo
1. Make a solid base
Roll a flat disc of clay, about as wide as your palm. This holds the flamingo steady. Thin legs alone will not stand.
2. Shape the body
Roll a plump teardrop. Taper one end to a soft tail. Keep the other end round for the chest.
3. Build the legs
Roll two thin but not tiny snakes. Slide a toothpick through each for strength. Press them into the base and the body. Blend the joins with your thumb.
4. Make the neck
Roll a long, slim tube. Bend it into a gentle S. Support it with your hand as you attach it. Score and wet both surfaces first.
5. Add the head and beak
Shape a small head. Add a short beak that bends downward at the tip. Press in two tiny eyes.
6. Dry, paint and seal
Dry flat for about 24 to 48 hours. Paint soft coral and cherry pink. Colour the beak cream with a dark tip. Seal when dry.
