You fold the corner of the page again. Or you use a receipt. Or a hair tie. A proper bookmark would be nice, but the ones in shops are either flimsy or oddly expensive. Here is a better idea. Make one.
How to make a clay bookmark at home
A clay bookmark is one of the easiest air dry clay projects there is. It is flat. It needs no joining. It dries fast. And it makes a small, thoughtful gift for a reader in your life. This guide shows you how to make a clay bookmark in a single sitting with no wheel and no kiln. Everything you need is in a Sawa Pottery Kit, delivered free across the UAE.
Why a bookmark is the perfect first project
Most beginners want to start with a bowl. Bowls are great, but they need even walls and patience. A bookmark is different. You roll a slab, cut a shape, add a pattern, and let it dry. It teaches you three core skills. Rolling an even slab. Cutting clean edges. Decorating a flat surface. Once you can do those, every other project gets easier.
It also uses very little clay. One Solo Kit at AED 198 will give you several bookmarks plus a small dish or two.

What you need
Air dry clay. A rolling tool or a smooth bottle. A cutting tool or a butter knife. Something to add texture, like a leaf, lace, a stamp or the end of a pen. Paint, a brush and varnish. All of these come in the kit apart from the bottle and the leaf.
Step by step
1. Roll a thin, even slab
Take a piece of clay about the size of a lime. Roll it out on a clean surface. Aim for the thickness of two stacked coins, around 4 to 5 millimetres. Too thin and it may snap. Too thick and it will bulk up your book. Keep the pressure even so the slab is the same thickness all over.
2. Cut your shape
A classic bookmark is a long rectangle, about 15 centimetres by 4 centimetres. You can also cut a leaf, an arch, a crescent or a simple tag. Use a ruler for straight edges. Cut slowly and lift away the extra clay.
3. Smooth the edges
Run a damp finger along every edge. This removes the rough cut line and gives you a soft, finished look. Do this now while the clay is still wet.
4. Add texture or a pattern
This is the fun part. Press a leaf into the surface and peel it away for a natural print. Use lace for a fine pattern. Stamp a letter or initial at the top. Or keep it plain and paint it later. Press gently. You want a clear impression, not a hole.
5. Make a hole for a tassel
Use a straw or the tip of a tool to punch a small hole near the top. This lets you add a ribbon or tassel once it is dry. It is optional but it makes the bookmark feel finished.
6. Dry it flat
Lay the bookmark on a flat surface and leave it alone for 24 to 48 hours. Flip it once halfway so both sides dry evenly. Flat pieces can curl if one side dries faster. Flipping stops that.
7. Paint and seal
Once fully dry, paint your design. Let the paint dry. Then apply two thin coats of varnish, front and back. Sealing keeps it strong and stops it from marking the pages.
Ideas to try
Paint a single colour with a gold edge. Write a name or a short word with a fine brush. Press a pattern of tiny dots with a pen end. Make a set of three in matching colours as a gift. Pair one with a book for a birthday and you have a present that feels personal without much effort.
Frequently asked questions
Will a clay bookmark break in a book?
Not if you roll it to a sensible thickness and seal it. Air dry clay is surprisingly tough once dry and varnished. Treat it like a ceramic tile, not like paper, and it will last for years.
How long does it take to dry?
Usually one to two days in a UAE home with the air conditioning on. Keep it out of direct sun. Fast drying can cause cracks.
Can kids make one?
Yes. It is a great project for children from around six years old. Rolling and stamping are easy. An adult can help with cutting. The Group Kit at AED 288 has enough clay for the whole family.
Does the kit include everything?
The Sawa kit includes air dry clay, tools, paints, a brush, varnish and a step by step guide. No wheel and no kiln needed. Delivery is free across the UAE.
